Thursday, 7:19 p.m., Mossdeep City's Community Stadium.

Once again, we rejoin the Mossdeep City's new Gym leader.

The stadium featured more people than usual— for another man of renown had been noted amongst the publicized challenger's list by the citizens.

"lam logan." Mossdeep's gym leader called, his gaze rising to the bleachers. "Come."

He was faced with a fellow gym leadeer— but he was, if nothing else, a hard ass while on the job. All socialization waited until after his shift was over.

His hand fetched a pokeball from his belt, before releasing an Alolan Sandshrew unto the field. It's icy spikes gleamed under the powerful floodlights, its sharp claws scrapping along the floors as it took in the arena.

"You may begin."

“Heya!” Lam greets cheerfully when he’s summoned to the pitch, a hand lifting in friendly wave.[break][break]
It’s common for him to find the time to sign up for open gym battles—more particularly when a new gym leader joins the fold.[break][break]
He expects some friendly banter, maybe a little bit of conversation as he figures out who Gwyar is, as he’s never managed to meet the man before now. But it quickly becomes apparent that battle mode is not the time for that.[break][break]
“So serious!” he chimes, though his own competitiveness begins to settle in and take root as he takes position on the opposing end.[break][break]
A toss of the pokeball yields a flygon, who lands on the pitch as his wings buzz at rapid speed.[break][break]
Given the cue, Lam nods. “Shake things up, Ladon!”[break][break]
The ground rumbles underneath the flygon’s concentration, and soon it begins to crumble and split in a fast, unsteady line toward the alolan sandslash. An EARTHQUAKE that seeks to uproot the other pokemon.[break][break]
No need to start slow, after all!

The Gym Leader was silent, his smile firmly set in a thin line. Normally, he criticized and advised his opponents midbattle.

There was no need for such against a fellow gym leader, a man presumably chosen for his skill as a pokemon trainer.

The arena was upheaved by the Flygon, stone and dirt upturning violently as the earth turned against the Sandlash.

But the steel-ice type had not been idle. It's eyes were aglow as the earth barreled towards it, its icy aura visibly wafting off its silhouette—

Before it exploded outwards in a sudden flash-freeze, covering the earth in a layer of ice even as it came crashing against it, whipping up a large cloud of white dust—

which was almost immediately parted, icicles flying out in all directions— including the Flygon's.

With the dust cleared, the Sandslash was revealed to still stand, surrounded by a layer of shattered ice spikes. A layer of its body's ice was cracked, but not yet broken.

Despite the flygon’s speed, the sudden spray of icy shards shot out at a pace too swift to dodge. Ladon turned, bracing as sharp cold and ice battered against his tough hide and buzzing wings.[break][break]

The beat slowed with the cold, though– making it much more difficult for him to take off into the air as initially planned.[break][break]

Rising at a hover, the dragon bobbed as he attempted to shake off the chill. It was a heavy blow, but not one that knocked Ladon out of the game so easily.[break][break]

Green eyes studied the creature attentively–attention briefly darting to the sturdy sandslash. Personally, he found the Alolan much more durable than the Kantonian. (Maybe he was biased toward his home region, though.)[break][break]

“Obscure the area!” Lam instructed, and slowly but surely, the flygon’s wings began to buzz rapidly again out of stubborn willpower.[break][break]

The upturned and cracked earth that remained from his prior attack rumbled and broke down to a finer silt as the wind raged to a whipping howl. Chunks of rock and clods of soil tumbled through the air as the pitch became fuzzy in the wake of a SANDSTORM.

The Gym leader was impassive as the storm came, glancing up. "And so it begins."

The world was covered by a cloak roaring dirt. Gym Trainers moved quickly, releasing Castforms in an attempt to contain storm to the battlefield.

For a brief moment, both pokemon were completely gone to the spectators, disappeared within the storm.

But whereas the blanket of sand was an impassable barrier to humans, to the Flygon, it represented no more than a windy day. Not great conditions for the Sandslash.

It looked around wearily. Where she its kantonian counterpart, she wouldn't have minded the sandstorm— she would've preferred it, even.

As things were, she couldn't see shit.

Only one thing left to do.

Blades of light surged around the Sandslash, briefly lighting up her surroundings as they spun about her.

Recovery came somewhat easier as the SANDSTORM surged across the pitch. Distracted by the buffeting winds, the sandslash focused upon its defenses instead–allowing Ladon the breather he needed.[break][break]
Just enough to gain the fortitude to launch into the sky, higher than a simple hover.[break][break]
“Follow the current!” Lam chimed, pleased with the flygon’s efforts thus far. Of course, it was still too early to predict the end. They’d only just begun, after all.[break][break]
At home in the gritty silt and storm, Ladon cut through air with ease. The soft glow of the Alolan Sandslash’s SWORDS DANCE cast itself through the torrent, and the dragon dove toward the light– arms outstretched as it sought to grapple and hurl his opponent with impressive SUPER POWER.

The sandstorm raged, and the Sandslash continued its dance, the glowing swords' flashes akin to a lighthouse at sea, all but guiding its opponent towards it.

Perhaps calling it a fire for a moth would've been more accurate.

It couldn't see its opponent coming, but it could hear it— the buzzing, alluring chant of 'The Desert Spirit'.

Eyes snapping wide, the Sandslash turned sharply to face the dragon, time appearing slow down as it swung a frozen claw towards them.

A vast swath of ice rose with the swing, erecting spikes of frozen snow within the desert arena.

Just a step too slow, however— The blow from superpower crashed and hurled into the Sandslash, sending it bouncing across stadium's soil.

TL;DR:
-Sandslash used Icicle Crash.
-Sandslash took damage. It was super effective.

Spikes of ice jutted up from the earth as the flygon crashed into his opponent. And though the sandslash was sent flying backward, the smash of frost and ice pelted into the dragon’s hide—drawing a bellow from deep in Ladon’s belly.[break][break]
His wingbeats faltered, the steady buzz ceasing as he dipped low in the air and then skidded across the pitch as the chill momentarily locked up his limbs.[break][break]
He came to a stop in a plume of dust and ice fragments, the sandstorm continuing to rage around them.[break][break]
The dragon’s tail lashed against the earth as he squinted through the grit to find where his opponent had landed.[break][break]
His wings struggled to lift him into the air again, so he rolled to his feet and lunged forward in stilted moment, DRAGON CLAWS flashing to swipe at the other pokemon.

The Sandlash moaned as it rolled sharply onto its paws and knees, curling tightly into a ball as its opponent smashed claws against its steely, frozen spikes, rocking its form.

It huffed and puffed whilst curled, the hot desert air of the faux sandstorm roaring around them.

Slowly, the Gym Leader unclasped his hands behind his back, moving for the first time from his sturdy position, and grasped at the collar of the heavy coat hanging from his shoulders like a cape, swinging it around before slipping his arms into the sleeves of the thick fabric.

In this hea—?

As the flygon battered the spikes, the alolan sandslash released a shrill scream— the sound blasting outwards from it like a shockwave, carrying with it a rushing cold that seemed to climb towards the skies.

The blue above 'em took on a deep, dark value— and the earth beneath began to freeze, starting from the soil directly around the Sandslash— and Flygon.

TL;DR:
-Sandslash took damage. It was not very effective.
-Sandslash used Snowscape.
-The weather turned to snowstorm!

All too quickly, the tide of the battle turned even more unfavorably in Lam’s direction.[break][break]
The cold of the blizzard ripped through the arena. It crowded out the winds of the sandstorm with howling fury, and Lam immediately shivered from the force of it. His hand rose again, shielding his eyes–this time from sleet and snow–as he tried to pinpoint the blur of green through the heavy weather.[break][break]
Ladon wasn’t faring well.[break][break]
The abrupt shift to harsh cold slowed the already lagging pace of his wingbeats, making him even slower–and more susceptible.[break][break]
His shielded eyes at least prevented his vision from being too obscured, but the sandslash blended far better with the snowstorm that surged around them, and the flygon lashed out wildly and aimlessly with a surging DRAGON PULSE at the first sign of those icy blue spikes that ridged the shrew’s back that he could pinpoint.[break][break]
A blaze of indigo draconic energy that cut through the haze of endless, swirling white.

The frigid cold was a much more comfortable arena for the Alolan Sandslash.

It laid low in the pooling snow of the blizzard and panted, pooling its little remaining energy for one big maneuver, eyes gazing out into the near blinding white at spots of green.

Its icy spikes grew faint, meshing with the roaring blizzard as its silhouette grew hazy, contrast diminishing by the second as it began to blend into the white.

A draconic pulse tore through the sudden tundra, blasting holes across the unnatural landscape.

But after several seconds, slowly, silently, a lump of white snow rose from behind the dragon. One could've mistaken it for a collapsing mound—

Were it not for the sharp, abrupt lunge that followed, its frigid form attempting to crash into the Flygon with the shrill, booming burst of crystal.

TL;DR:
-Snowstorm triggered Sandslash's Snow Cloak.
-Sandslash used Icicle Crash.

this wasn't a good turn. not good at all.[break][break]
ladon suffered in the frigid cold of the snowstorm. his wings crusted with frost - beating slower and unable to summon a second SANDSTORM to clear it away. the flygon bellowed, and lam shielded his eyes with a hand as he tried to follow the blur of green through the haze of blinding white, and shivered from the chill.[break][break]
he hated the cold.[break][break]
would be oh so handy to have a cloak like gwyar's right about now. give a guy a hint, huh![break][break]
as he whirled to and fro in search of his opponent, ladon was caught unaware by the sandslash as it re-emerged behind him.[break][break]
ice crashed against his sturdy hide and he plummeted. he swung out with tearing DRAGON CLAWS as he went down - not quite content with completely succumbing so passively

Dragon claws carved into ice and steel plate, dragging over the Sandslash's chest and making it reel back from the blow.

Her feet wobbled beneath her, head tilting back and forth; she was so damn tired.

But— she still had something left in the tank.

The wintery air around her picked up in speed and coldness as she summoned up the last of her strength, sending a freezing blizzard hurtling through the battlefield.

The clash of the two pokemon traded blow for blow. Between the shifting weather patterns and slashing attacks, both seemed to bear the brunt of one another. Neither one willing to concede to the onslaught.[break][break]
But the cold did Ladon in.[break][break]
His wings beat sluggishly, too weak to pull himself up into the air among the bluster of swirling snow again.[break][break]
Frost crept along his scales, stiffening his limbs as his long tail lashed furiously. Another pulse ripped out from the sandslash’s proximity, and it pushed the flygon back. The wind caught him, and he tumbled across the pitch. Too thoroughly frozen to rise again.[break][break]
Lam let out a held breath, and then his shoulders slumped. “Aw, damn,” he remarked as his hand ruffled through his air to shake loose snowflakes that had collected in the bright, spring green. A gesture that made him look as casual as possible, despite the disappointment driven by his competitiveness. “Helluva cold front there.” He laughed, inflection playful, “Hope you greet the other gym leaders more warmly.”
